But I had roofers putting a new roof on my house and I didn't ask them if they wanted cold waters - I just took them out to them so they couldn't say no. They were grateful and when they were done, I went out to say thank you and goodbye - but they had already left - and there on the patio chair was a $20 bill. Aww, they paid me for the water! I felt so sad!

To add onto that, small talk is "grooming conversation" as in the conversation that replaces finding eachother's lice in primates. It basically demonstrates non threatening behavior, accepting tea or coffee basically implicitly says "I trust you to make a good drink that is safe for me to consume" while offering it says "I can offer a token of my ability to provide safe and good food". As someone who has autistic tentdancies, that helped me understand why I should do small talk.
