I just had clients that were almost under the impression they would supply the paint. I had mentioned to them exactly that; paints are all different and working on a kitchen i wanted to supply something that would hold up well.

I agree with that as a professional painter and you forgot to mention the most predominant factor with a do it yourself painter versus a professional. A professional will know which paint is going to cover the project with one or a maximum of two coats and cost the cheapest. So many times I see people thinking they are going to save money by buying the cheapest paint not realizing that they may be buying a paint with the consistency of water that absolutely will not cover the old paint without multiple coats. Whatever money they think they saved buying say a $30 gallon of paint verse say a $45 gallon of paint that would have been recommended ends up costing three times or more the labor hours which is extremely more expensive than paying for better paint. Not to mention that many of those cheap paints would require a 24 dry time between coats for the paint to fully saturate. Many inexperienced painters might see some bleed through after even a second coat back rolled in the same day and think putting a third coat on would fix that. Truth is many if not most times if you see bleed through coming through your production after a second coat it wouldn’t matter if you rolled over it 3,4, or even 10 times in that same day it will still bleed through the next day because the paint didn’t saturate. Moral of that comment is if you back roll over a wall and it still doesn’t look like it covered. Then you need to let the paint fully saturate and dry before applying any additional coats. Also that with paint and many things you get what you pay for. Trust a professional to know their products and they should generally know how premium or how cheap you can go to get the project done in one coat. The inverse is also true. You may not need to buy a premium expensive paint when a cheaper one could have just as easily been used and still done in one coat.

i just found your channel after painting 2 rooms in my new home and wondering what the heck went wrong. I painted rooms in my old house a few years ago and they turned out fine. The ones I just painted are patchy and weird looking after 2 coats. I use the same tools, prepped the same way, am the same person, so all that's left is the paint. I can understand why you would want to bring your own paint to a job! I guess paint quality has gone down over time like everything else.

Seeing this more and more, you dont take a steak to a restaurant and ask the chef to cook it, do you? I'm planning on recording a video on this subject too!!!

When the homeowner buys the paint, they don't buy enough paint and it's not on the job site when you are ready to paint. The contractor ends up losing time.

Painter should always supply the paint because they get 50-65% off on paint. So if the client buys the chepest paint he can find, it makes the work more difficult for the painter. Or if he buys good, $80 a gallon paint, he's just wasting money. It's good ask the painter to get the paint and pay him a 25-30% mark-up. It's difficult to charge more than $30 an hour as a quality painter because people think it's easy and everybody can do it (which is wrong, and you would know if you already compared a pro with a random guy holding a brush). So the extra $30-200 profit margin on paint helps motivate the painter to do a good job. Now I'm sure people reading that will now say "oh' I'm going to have my painter buy quality paint for $35 a gallon, I'll just reimburse him, AND I'm gonna pay him $15 an hour". Some clients are canibals ;)
